PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Therapy enables the body to heal at a much faster rate after dental surgery. When the body heals naturally, it moves cells to the area of the wound to help the process of healing. One of these cells is called a platelet. Platelets do many things and particularly help the blood to clot, at the same time releasing growth factors (GF) into the wound. These GFs help the body to repair itself by stimulating stem cells to grow new tissue. The more growth factor released into the wound, the more new tissue is produced. The end result is that the PRP allows the body to heal much faster. 

During the process, the doctor usually takes the patient’s own blood and then spins it to give a rich concentration of platelets. When this heavily concentrated sample of blood is isolated, it will contain within it up to five times more growth factor than normal.

PRP allows our doctors to make use of the body’s natural healing capacity but at a much faster and efficient rate. Studies have shown that dental patients treated with PRP therapy benefited greatly with their wound healing up to six times faster than usual.

The doctor may recommend PRP therapy if he thinks it would be beneficial for you to have help with post-operative healing. It may also be used if you are going to have fairly intense dental surgery carried out, such as bone grafting for implants, sinus lifts or attention to palate problems. Older patients may also struggle to heal when they have teeth extracted. This is particularly so if you have had problems in the past with improper or slow healing after dental treatment.

If your wound does not heal as it should, further problems can appear and existing negative conditions can escalate. Poor healing can even result in loss of bone which will then result in reconstructive surgery being required. PRP speeds up healing in a simple, efficient and very affordable way.
